Rest Day
A day off the bike. We cleaned and lubed our bikes this AM and I found the tube had gone through the side wall of the rear tire. Glad I found it on a rest day. Makes one think twice about roaring down the mountains.
The temps are dropping and reached the 30s today with a few snow flurries today. A bunch of us went to a bike shop and REI to buy another layer of clothing for tomorrow. At REI there were 2 bikes loaded with camping gear out front. One of the riders had recently ridden from Argentina to Alaska. That is an epic journey.
We are traveling with CrossRoads Adventure Cycling. They are doing a wonderful job planning the routes and supporting us. There are 15 riders and 6 staff members on this trip. We stay in nice hotels each night. Or as Linda says "the kind of hotels we used to stay in when Bill worked". This is as close as I will ever come to traveling like an NBA player. We ride into the hotel each day, get the key and go to the room where the air is running and the luggage is on the bed. Basically, we just have to pedal and eat. We have 2 mechanics with us (usually on the road with us), 2 vans, and box truck on the route. The staff sets up 2 or 3 stops a day to get drinks and food. The owner of the company buys us the food we should eat, her son (the Logistics Mgr) buys us the food we like to eat. A nice balance.
The next couple of days are 90 miles days. The predicted weather (potential snow) looks interesting.
