Weather and Speed

Hopped on the bikes at 7 this morning and rode off in 32 degree weather and snow.  It then turned to sleet, which hurts a bit on the face......kind of missed the snow.

~40 minutes into the ride we got just ahead of the storm and with the tail wind and the smooth road surface, we got cookin'. A couple of hours into the ride it got into the 40s.

The landscapes and clouds are beautiful. The trains are very, very long.

At 60 miles we were standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. The Eagles tunes were a nice touch.

There are lots of road side attractions in AZ. Some are worth stopping for.
The sleet/snow returned for our last hour, as did the 30 degree weather. Linda had a flat ~10 miles out of Holbrook, AZ (our end town). It gets hard to get the tire off and repaired in sleet and blowing winds. The fingers just don't want to work........or bend.

We finished the 93.6 miles averaging over 21 mph. Probably the fastest we will ever ride that kind of distance. Walked into the hotel a little before 1 and were thawed out by 2.

So far, 8 days in the saddle: 634 miles, 26,374 feet of climb.

As a fellow rider from France via England says: "not always fun while we are doing it, but fun in retrospect."

  1. I c you're "standing on a corner in Winslow, CA" but is there also a statue of the "7 women on my mind"? 👀
    Sounds like an interesting
and memorable day! Is Linda on a jackrabbit or jackalope?

    1. A jackrabbit, and it was not pretty watching me trying to quickly dismount, get moving, and stay ahead of the storm.

  2. Anybody but you guys would have crawled into truck about 30 minutes in. I would have reached out a hand to help them up.

Check them tires before you get on the Eastern slopes 😉

    1. Thanks, but we're with a group that just won't quit. I (Linda) am definitely finding my physical limits (100+ temp, 80 miles). Bill hasn't reached his yet. :-)
