Fun Ride with good news
Today's ride: McPherson, KS to Abilene, KS: 60 miles with ~1,800 feet of climb
The other riders continued on to Junction City, KS (80 miles total)
As we left McPherson, there was some road construction. No big deal, ridden around it many times. They had the big grinder out, grinding up the asphalt.
No one had a firm number, but there was general agreement this is what we rode on for 6 or 7 miles. I did it standing up and Linda said I looked like the guy who rode across Iowa without a seat.
Our first stop was in Durham, KS in a nice park.
Across the street they are working on moving the white house over to the side of the lot, building a basement, then setting the house back on the new basement.
Someone said "why would you do all that work for only a basement?"
Linda replied: "Wouldn't you want a basement if you lived in Kansas?".....followed by hardy laughter.
Then came additional good one liners: "Plus you can then lock your niece out" (a quick and witty Wizard of Oz reference)........
The road then turned to the north, was smooth, and we had our first quartering tail wind. There are more trees now, and the there are one of Linda's specialties: ROLLERS
Rolled into Abilene. 2 riders were stopped on the side of the road just outside the city limits. Linda asked them if they were banned from the city.
We had lunch at the hitching post. Interesting daily special: chicken or beef with noodles, on mashed potatoes with gravy. It was quite good.
After lunch, the truck driver took me to the ER in Junction City. I had my abscess drained and packed with 18 inches of gauze. In and out in an hour.
We are thinking about renting a car for a couple of days to let everything settle down back there. Then get back in the saddle. (Linda: I cannot believe Bill's toughness. Most people would have quit a week ago. I would have.)
I told the kids I was glad to "have it behind me" and the puns flew via text:
Here are some of the folks that we ride with, from a stop the other day
Linda said this has been the most enjoyable way to lose weight. Other times she was always hungry,

- No shame in sitting one out
- Keep it all in the rear view
- Hopefully you've already passed the bottom
- Your story bums me out
