DeRidder to Mamou

Short 66 mile day.
Lots of good and a chunk of bad.
A sobering start as a Doc from UNC crashed and had to be sewn up.
While we were waiting for the SAG vehicle to pick him up, we were all guessing the number of stitches he would get. A former corporate tax guy nailed the number, somewhat to the doc's chagrin.
Of course we all started checking on the bike once we learned he didn't hit his head.
He is going to be very sore tomorrow and will learn about the other places that took the hit. He is my age (65) and we don't bounce.

Rode by so many crawfish farms. Many of the farmers grow rice in the same "fields".

This is one of the machines they use to harvest the crawfish. Backbreaking work to pull up the traps by hand

After 60 miles we rolled into Mamou, LA. We had a great bowls of gumbo at a little cafe then walked across the street to Fred's Lounge for some music. There were 10 Harley riders in their 30s from Houston out front. Funny to see them in their biker gear and us in our biker gear talking about riding in LA. They kept saying how impressed they are that we are riding across the country.

We at staying at a small park outside of town. A local crawfish farmer brought over 100 pounds from "that field, second row".
They put on on heck of a crawfish boil for us. It is really a social event as you sit, peel, eat, drink and talk.
First round. I sat with 2 Texans and man can they go through them

Tomorrow is a good 90+ mile day, so I had one of our 2 mechanics do a quick tune up. Of course he took it for a test ride.
Great guy. He is from Leeds, UK. Came to the US on a bowling scholarship. His team were national champs.
He is a hard core biker now.
The owner of the park has horses. They shake their heads when you ask them if they want a carrot.

  1. Except for Doc, sounds like a good day.
Seems like bicyclists bring out the best in every town or group they encounter. Not a surprise to me.

Best to you, Bill, and Linda. Be safe.
